Underworld guardian legends of myth

Underworld Guardians

Some creatures do not wander the world.
They guard thresholds.

Some monsters hunt. Some haunt. Some wait.

Underworld guardians are creatures associated with the afterlife, gates, tombs, crossroads, death omens, judgment, and places humans were not supposed to enter.

They are not always evil. That is part of what makes them interesting.

Cerberus does not simply attack travelers. He guards the Underworld.

Garmr does not merely howl in the dark. He stands near the boundary of death and disaster.

Black dogs, hellhounds, spectral hounds, and death omens appear across folklore as warnings, escorts, punishers, protectors, or signs that the border between the living and the dead has become concerningly thin.

This guide covers Cerberus, Garmr, hellhounds, black dogs, death omens, tomb guardians, and other beings associated with the afterlife, gates, judgment, and forbidden places.

Proceed carefully. The door may be open, but that does not mean you were invited.
